Join John Armytage & Craig Williams for a very special summer photography workshop based in Quirindi and exploring the beautiful Liverpool Plains during sunflower season.
This workshop has been designed around one of the most colourful times of the year, with opportunities to photograph spectacular sunflower fields, historic rural properties, old sheds, classic Australian farming landscapes and, subject to final access confirmation, the Iconic Superman Barn.
With a small group and plenty of hands-on assistance in the field, we'll concentrate on finding the best available light and helping you capture the character of this remarkable part of country NSW.
THE SUNFLOWER EXPERIENCE
There is something very special about standing in front of a field filled with thousands of sunflowers as the first or last light of the day moves across the landscape.
Our aim will be to photograph the sunflowers in the very best available light, including sunrise and sunset sessions where seasonal conditions and access allow.
We'll work with sweeping landscape compositions, individual flowers, patterns, backlighting, foregrounds and telephoto compression.
Because sunflowers are an agricultural crop, their location, condition and flowering time are completely dependent upon rainfall and seasonal conditions.
John and Craig will arrive in the region before the workshop to scout the area and select the best available sunflower locations and photographic opportunities for the group.
FEATURE LOCATIONS
THE ICONIC SUPERMAN BARN — TBC
One of the locations we are hoping to include is the remarkable Iconic Superman Barn near Breeza, subject to final private-property access and confirmation closer to the workshop.
The barn is an extraordinary photographic subject surrounded by the sweeping rural landscapes of the Liverpool Plains.
If access is confirmed, our aim is to photograph the barn in beautiful low light, with opportunities potentially including sunrise, sunset and an optional night photography session, depending on conditions.
Access to the Superman Barn is private and remains TBC.
WINDY STATION — TBC
We are also working with Windy Station, one of the region's wonderful historic rural properties.
Our proposed visit would provide opportunities to photograph the property's sunflower fields and, if restoration works permit, its historic woolshed.
We are also hoping to incorporate some of the fascinating history of Windy Station into our visit.
As this is a working agricultural property, sunflower planting and flowering are dependent upon rainfall and seasonal conditions. The historic woolshed is also undergoing restoration at the moment, but is scheduled to be open by this time.
Windy Station sunflower and woolshed access therefore remain TBC and will be confirmed closer to the workshop.
In addition to these feature locations, we'll explore the region for old sheds, rural landscapes, historic buildings, agricultural subjects and other photographic opportunities discovered during our pre-workshop scouting.
DAY 1 — THURSDAY 28TH JANUARY 2027
WELCOME TO QUIRINDI & SUNSET PHOTOGRAPHY
Arrive in Quirindi and check into our accommodation from approximately 2:00 pm.
Later in the afternoon we'll meet as a group, introduce everyone and run through the plans for our four days together.
After an early dinner, we'll head out for our first sunset photography session.
Our planned hero location is the Iconic Superman Barn, subject to final access confirmation.
We'll arrive well before sunset, giving us plenty of time to explore compositions and work through the changing afternoon light into golden hour, sunset and afterglow.
This first session will also give John and Craig an opportunity to spend time with each photographer and get a feel for what you'd particularly like to work on during the workshop.
Overnight — Quirindi
DAY 2 — FRIDAY 29TH JANUARY 2027
SUNFLOWERS AT SUNRISE • RURAL LANDSCAPES • HERITAGE • SUNSET
It's an early start as we head out before dawn for our first sunflower sunrise photography session.
We'll arrive before sunrise, allowing plenty of time to set up and photograph the changing light as it begins to illuminate the fields and surrounding Liverpool Plains.
After our shoot, we'll return to Quirindi for breakfast and some downtime.
Later in the morning we'll head back into the countryside to explore some of the region's rural photographic opportunities.
Depending upon access and conditions, this may include historic shearing sheds, old farm buildings, rustic structures and classic country NSW landscapes.
Following lunch, we'll spend some time around the Quirindi Rural Heritage Museum, providing a completely different range of photographic subjects, including historic agricultural equipment, textures, details and rural heritage.
There will be some free time during the afternoon to download images, recharge batteries and relax.
After an early dinner we'll head out again for a golden-hour and sunset photography session, selecting the best location according to the afternoon's weather, light and conditions.
Overnight — Quirindi
DAY 3 — SATURDAY 30TH JANUARY 2027
SUNRISE • RURAL HERITAGE • GROUP EDITING • SUNSET • OPTIONAL ASTRO
Another early start gives us the opportunity to photograph one of our feature locations at sunrise.
Subject to access confirmation, we are planning a sunrise session at the Iconic Superman Barn, giving us completely different light and photographic possibilities from our first visit.
After breakfast in Quirindi, we'll head out again for a morning of rural photography.
Depending upon final access arrangements, this may include a visit to a historic woolshed or rural property, providing opportunities to photograph weathered timbers, interiors, architectural details and the wonderful character of Australia's rural heritage.
After lunch we'll return to Quirindi for our Group Editing Session.
GROUP EDITING SESSION - OPTIONAL
During the workshop, we'll set aside approximately two hours for a relaxed group editing session.
This is not a formal Lightroom or Photoshop teaching session. It's an opportunity for everyone to sit together, work on some of the images they've captured so far and see how they are progressing.
John and Craig will move around the group, look at your images with you and offer individual suggestions and practical tips where helpful.
We can assist with Lightroom and Photoshop techniques, talk through different editing approaches and help you get the best from some of your favourite images from the workshop.
It's also a great opportunity to see what others in the group have captured from the same locations and share ideas in a relaxed environment.
Following a break and an early dinner, we'll head out for another sunflower sunset photography session, conditions permitting.
OPTIONAL ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY
If the weather, cloud cover and night-sky conditions cooperate, we may also include an optional astrophotography session later in the evening.
Subject to access, the Superman Barn would make an incredible foreground for this session.

DAY 4 — SUNDAY 31ST JANUARY 2027
FINAL SUNRISE • SUNFLOWERS • FAREWELL BREAKFAST
We'll make the most of our final morning with one last sunrise photography session.
Our proposed location is Windy Station, subject to confirmation, sunflower conditions and access.
This will give us another opportunity to photograph sunflowers and the surrounding rural landscape in beautiful early-morning light.
After the shoot we'll return to Quirindi for a relaxed farewell breakfast together.
We'll then return to our accommodation, with check-out at approximately 10:00 am, bringing our Sunflower Photography Workshop to a close.

PHOTOGRAPHY SUPPORT
Throughout the four days, John and Craig will be alongside participants in the field and available to help you get the most from each location.
Whether you'd like assistance with composition, camera settings, exposure, filters, working a scene, sunrise and sunset photography, long-lens landscapes or simply another set of eyes on a composition, we're there to help.
Our small-group approach allows us to spend time with each photographer and tailor our assistance to your individual experience and needs.
IMPORTANT — WEATHER, SUNFLOWERS & LOCATIONS
As with all of our landscape photography workshops, our itinerary is flexible and locations may change depending on the weather, light and photographic conditions.
This is particularly important with our Sunflower Workshop because sunflowers are an agricultural crop and their location, flowering time and condition are dependent upon rainfall, planting and seasonal conditions.
John and Craig will arrive in the region a couple of days before the workshop to scout the area and assess the sunflower fields and other locations.
We may change the order, timing or location of photography sessions during the workshop to take advantage of the best available conditions.
Windy Station and the Iconic Superman Barn are currently TBC and subject to final access confirmation.
We believe this flexibility is an important part of landscape photography. Rather than following a rigid schedule regardless of conditions, we'll always aim to have the group in the best location for the light and weather we're given.
SMALL GROUP EXPERIENCE
Our workshops are deliberately kept small, creating a relaxed and friendly environment where everyone has room to photograph and plenty of access to John and Craig.
It's not about rushing from one location to another.
It's about enjoying the experience, spending time in beautiful locations and coming home with photographs you're proud of.

From time to time, weather, tides, road conditions or other circumstances beyond our control may require adjustments to the itinerary, photography locations, accommodation, dining venues or schedule. Any changes will always be made in the best interests of the group and to maximise your photographic opportunities.
Cancellations & Refunds
If you need to cancel your booking, please notify us in writing via email as soon as possible.
Payments are refundable up to 60 days prior to the workshop commencement date.
Unfortunately, refunds cannot be provided within 60 days of departure unless your place can be filled by another participant.
We strongly recommend that all participants take out comprehensive travel insurance to protect against unforeseen circumstances.
Participant Responsibilities
Participants are responsible for arranging:
Travel to and from the workshop (unless otherwise stated)
Personal travel insurance
Medical insurance (where applicable)
Any personal expenses not included in the workshop package
Participants are also responsible for ensuring they have a reasonable level of fitness suitable for the workshop and for taking appropriate care of their personal belongings and photographic equipment.
John Armytage Photography accepts no responsibility for loss, theft, damage, personal injury or additional travel expenses incurred during the workshop.
Workshop Cancellation
In the unlikely event that John Armytage Photography is required to cancel a workshop, all monies paid directly to us will be refunded in full.
While we will always endeavour to provide as much notice as possible, we cannot accept responsibility for any third-party costs incurred by participants, including flights, accommodation, travel arrangements or other associated bookings. For this reason, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.
