Melbourne CBD Photography Workshop – Capture, Learn & Be Inspired - March 2025
Federation Square
Written by John Armytage
From March 13th to 16th, I teamed up with Craig Williams to lead a 4-days 3 nights Melbourne CBD Photography Tour and Workshop. This workshop brought together creativity, learning, and a love of food in one of Australia’s most photographed Cities.
Melbourne is a city that inspires. Its laneways, heritage buildings, bustling markets, and vibrant street culture offered endless opportunities for our group to capture, learn, and be inspired, and lets not forget most of all have Fun.
Street Photography in the Heart of Melbourne
Queen Victoria Markets Melbourne
Street photography was a major focus of this workshop. At Queen Victoria Market, the colours, characters, and movement created lively scenes that challenged participants to think quickly about composition and timing. It was a fantastic opportunity to practice finding a point of interest and leading lines, two essentials for creating striking street images, even with street photography.
Architecture, Landmarks & Urban Landscapes
State Library of Victoria
We explored some of Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks, including the State Library of Victoria, Flinders Street Station, and Federation Square. Each location combined historic architecture with modern city life, providing a variety of subjects to capture. On Collins Street and Bourke Street Mall, participants honed their skills in both candid street photography and urban landscapes, experimenting with angles, light, and framing to tell a stronger story through their images.
Laneways, Colour & Hidden Gems

Of course, no Melbourne photography workshop would be complete without exploring the laneways. Hosier Laneand AC/DC Lane offered bold graffiti backdrops perfect for creativity and colour, while tucked-away arcades and side streets rewarded those who looked closer with unique compositions and details. These locations reminded us that sometimes the best images are found in the unexpected.
Creative Tuition & Learning Together
Throughout the workshop, Craig and I worked closely with the group to teach practical skills — from mastering composition to making the most of natural light in a busy city. Whether participants were beginners with a smartphone or experienced photographers, the focus was always on building confidence, improving technique, and finding inspiration in every scene.
Dining & Connection
Vespa Rosa Restaurant
Photography is always at the heart of these tours, but the experiences around the table make them even more memorable. Melbourne is renowned for its food culture, and each evening we enjoyed great dining together. Sharing stories, reflecting on the day’s images, and enjoying amazing meals turned the workshop into more than just photography — it became a celebration of creativity, connection, and community.
Wrapping It Up
The Melbourne CBD Photography Tour and Workshop proved once again that this city is a playground for photographers. From graffiti-covered laneways and bustling markets to grand architecture and hidden corners, Melbourne gave us endless opportunities to capture something unique. Add in expert tuition, hands-on learning, and world-class dining, and it was four days that will inspire participants long after the trip ended.
