Autumn in the New England – Landscape Photography Workshop

Gostwyck Chapel

Gostwyck Chapel

Written by John Armytage

From May 8th to 11th, I teamed up with Craig Williams to lead a four-day autumn photography workshop in the New England Tablelands. With crisp mountain air, rolling farmland, fiery autumn colours, and misty mornings, this region is truly a photographer’s paradise. Our group not only captured stunning images but also enjoyed plenty of laughs, great food, and hands-on learning.

Gostwyck Chapel – A Foggy Autumn Morning

One of the highlights was photographing the famous Gostwyck Chapel near Uralla. Also the Tree Lined Streets. On a foggy autumn morning, the historic stone church and its elm trees glowed in shades of gold, orange, and red. The mist created a magical atmosphere that every photographer dreams of.

Here, we really focused on teaching composition techniques — finding a strong point of interest, using leading lines, and building depth in every image. It was the perfect location to demonstrate how a striking composition transforms a photo from ordinary to unforgettable.

Waterfalls of New England – Ebor Falls & Hidden Gems

Ebor Falls

Ebor Falls - One of the most photogenic waterfalls I have ever shot.

The region’s waterfalls are always a highlight on any New England photography tour. From the flowing cascades of Ebor Falls to secluded gorges carved deep into the landscape, each location offered new creative challenges. We encouraged participants to experiment with shutter speeds to capture both silky flows and dramatic, powerful drops.

Rolling Farmlands & Rural Charm

Loan Tree

The wide-open farmlands of New England are equally inspiring. With lone gum trees, rustic sheds, and sweeping hills under big skies, the rural scenery provided endless opportunities to practice composition and storytelling through landscape photography.

Armidale’s Architecture & Autumn Streetscapes

Armidale Catholic Church

Armidale Catholic Church

In Armidale, we shifted focus to architectural photography. The sandstone churches, historic buildings, and tree-lined streets glowing with autumn colour were fantastic subjects. This was a great chance to show how the same principles of composition apply to urban and architectural photography as much as they do to landscapes.

Food, Fun & Friendships

Of course, a John Armytage Photography Workshop isn’t only about the photography — it’s about the experience. Each evening we enjoyed great food, shared stories, and reflected on the day’s adventures. These moments are just as memorable as the images, creating new friendships and a strong sense of community.
